Fohhn in jazz mode at Vitoria and San Sebastian festivals

In Vitoria’s Mendizorroza Arena and the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastian, Fohhn Focus Venue systems deliver unprecedented results.

July is the time for jazz festivals in the Basque country. This year, Fohhn, together with Spanish distributor neotecnia and Fluge Audiovisuales, supplied the new Focus Venue system with Beam Steering technology for two major events.

In both event venues, a setup consisting entirely of Fohhn systems produced excellent results with regard to coverage, evenness and acoustic clarity. Moreover, the devices’ cardioid functionality ensured cleaner mixes. It was for those precise reasons that the technical- and production manager, renowned sound engineer Fernando Díaz, had decided to use Fohhn systems for both events.

Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival
At the 42nd Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival, visitors to the Mendizorroza Arena were able to enjoy a whole range of jazz styles and internationally renowned bands. Whether it was an emotional performance from Carla Bruni, or strong funky numbers from Earth, Wind and Fire or Kool and the Gang, the system consistently proved its great versatility.

The critique from sound engineers, public and press was universally positive: “A clear, direct and powerful sound!” The installation team also underlined the ease and speed with which the system could be flown straight, without requiring any angle adjustments.

The Focus Venue system used here consisted of two FV-200 low-mid modules and a single FV-100 high frequency module on each side. These systems covered the entire venue with its audience of around 5,000.

To extend the low frequency range, four PS-850 subwoofers (2x 18”) were used on each side in a cardioid L-R configuration in order to maintain a cardioid system across the entire frequency range. For outfills, two PT-70 point source speakers were used, which also have cardioid functionality. Six XT-10 loudspeakers were used as front fills, while eight XM-4 wedges served as stage monitors.

San Sebastián Heineken Jazzaldia
At the 53rd San Sebastian Jazzaldia, Focus Venue systems were installed on a particularly iconic stage in the 2000-seat Kursaal Auditorium, which, this year saw performances from international music “greats” such as Caetano Veloso, Brad Meldhau, Kenny Barron, Gregory Porter together with symphony orchestra, and Yann Tiersen.

For the sound reinforcement in this auditorium, three FV-200 plus two FV-100 modules were used on each side. Every sound engineer praised the outstanding evenness and clarity over the entire frequency range, audible right up to the very back row of seating. This was due to the possibility of being able to fully control the beam dispersion of frequencies that are usually tricky in enclosed spaces.

The system was extended with three PS-850 subwoofers on each side in a cardioid setup and six XT-10 loudspeakers used as front fills. Eight XM-4 wedges were used for those artists who required stage monitors.

Focus Venue
Released shortly before Christmas 2017, Focus Venue is the latest line array with electronically steerable beam characteristics. The system is highly versatile as its beam dispersion can be adjusted with a single click - in real time. Its application possibilities range from sound reinforcement for larger events and concerts, to fixed installation as a PA system for lecture theatres, theatres and concert halls that require precise and powerful sound.

An entire system can be controlled using Fohhn Audio Soft, a unique software application that also enables the beam dispersion to be intuitively adjusted in real time. Furthermore, all subwoofers as well as additional side fills, front fills and monitors can be driven using digital amplifiers from the new Fohhn DI-Series. This enables the electronic adjustment of the beam dispersion to also be extended to sub arrays and for these to be controlled and monitored together with the main system.
