Modern media technology has found its way into churches. How can the sound and atmosphere of a place of worship be preserved and conveyed to the community at home?

When on site means everywhere

Hybrid church services

Especially in hybrid services, in which church communities are on site and the service is also recorded on video or made available via live stream, it's important to use technology that is easy to use for those involved and which can be invisibly integrated into the room whilst still offering the best possible sound quality for both the community on site but also for those at home. This is the type of use case where loudspeakers from Fohhn might be a great solution.

The room makes the sound

The acoustics of churches

The demands on the sound reinforcement system in a church could not be higher. The imposing naves with enormous ceiling heights and smooth facades of stone and glass generate extreme reverberation times. In order to do justice to these room acoustics and the protection of these historical monuments, special loudspeakers are needed.

Planning of a church sound system is an obvious challenge. Practically all sacred buildings have in common that loudspeakers cannot be placed just anywhere. Here it is particularly important that loudspeakers are visually inconspicuous. In reality, this leads to the quality of the acoustics suffering way more often than necessary, which means stress for the preacher and especially for church community. The goal should always be to enable a fatigue-free listening experience even in the acoustically demanding architecture of a worship hall, church oder mosque. The participants of any religious event will be grateful.

In historic church rooms, the integration of a good sound system is often a challenge.

Every church space is different

Loudspeaker concepts

Whether church or cathedral, mosque or synagogue, temple or small chapel: Fohhn has been meeting the challenge with great success for many years with its renowned loudspeaker columns (so-called line source speakers). Fohhn has already equipped countless houses of worship all over the world. The excellent directivity of Fohhn columns is usually the optimal solution for difficult acoustics.

The sound then hits the audience in a directed manner and is not spread throughout the room as with conventional loudspeakers. Disturbing reflections are thus avoided and speech in particular is well understood throughout the nave. In more complex projects, audio signals are now also transmitted digitally. We are a pioneer in this technology and have been at home in digital technology for decades.

Integration and monument protection

Historic preservation and inconspicuous sound reinforcement of church interiors are no problem with special colors, Fohhn Texture Design, scalable cabinet lengths and with Fohhn Beam Steering technology. This allows the loudspeakers to disappear visually, as they can be painted in wall colors or integrated into niches. They can also be positioned more freely and do not need to be tilted mechanically. The radiation pattern can be easily adjusted digitally.

Fohhn's history

30 years of experience

The founders of Fohhn Audio AG played music together in a band in churches and were dealing with the challenge of improving sound quality and speech intelligibility in the complex acoustics of a church 30 years ago. In the meantime, this has grown into a company with 100 employees and a wealth of experience, which now also equips very complex, international churches, houses of worship and devotional halls with solutions. All loudspeakers and amplifiers are not only developed, but also built and repaired at our premises in Nürtingen, Swabia. For each project, we also provide you with a Fohhn contact person who personally helps with advice and assistance in calibrating the systems.

Fohhn has been successfully developing and manufacturing high-quality loudspeaker systems since 1993 in Nürtingen near Stuttgart, Germany. From the first professional battery-powered loudspeaker of the 1990s to the most popular Beam Steering systems on the market, Fohhn has proven time and again that it stands for innovation and technological progress.

High-tech for special use cases

Fohhn Beam Steering Technology

Especially in churches, a loudspeaker cannot necessarily be placed where it makes the most sense acoustically. In churches, mosques, chapels or monasteries, one would not want a technical device to obscure the view of the elaborately decorated altar, the listed windows or the beautiful Romanesque or Gothic architecture. However, if you completely ignore the acoustic properties of these sacred spaces, you get problems especially in rooms with high reverberation times: a sermon is no longer understandable and the service becomes a challenge for the ears. What to do?

Fohhn Beam Steering technology provides valuable help here. With this loudspeaker technology, it is possible to direct the sound to where it is needed. And without having to tilt the speaker itself to do so. Both the vertical aperture angle and the sound tilt angle can be controlled with these loudspeakers using intuitive software. This makes it possible to mount loudspeakers in chapels, cathedrals, cathedrals and other listed rooms in places where they do not visually interfere. Nevertheless, the sound reinforcement quality is crystal clear and the preacher's speech is easily understandable.

More about the technology
Fohhn speaker systems can be controlled via software. This not only affects the volume and sound characteristics, but also the so-called dispersion behavior.

Use cases

Small churches

When it's about speech

In smaller churches, it's often about the best possible transmission of speech.
Fohhn LC line source speakers transmit the frequency range of speech and singing and are more cost-effective than other solutions for churches.

Sometimes in churches it is simply about the best possible transmission of speech. Every word at the church service should be understood well and without effort. Our LC line source speakers are optimised for this purpose. They transmit the frequency range of speech and singing and are very cost-effective.

Benefits
  • Optimum speech intelligibility
  • Cost-efficient solution
  • Hardly any reflections thanks to directivity
Components
  • 2 × LC-100
  • Additional LC speakers for a delay line or the church's gallery, if necessary
  • MA-4.600

Medium-sized buildings

When there are also musicians

Mid-sized worship halls and churches need sound systems for speech but also for powerful music.
Fohhn's LX line source speakers are suitable for the well-sounding and dynamic transmission of live music whilst having all advantages of a line source systems such as minimizing distracting effects of the church room acoustics.

Building systems that are suitable not only for speech but also for powerful music in churches is the main reason why Fohhn has been founded in 1993. The LXP line source speakers are suitable for the well-sounding and dynamic transmission of live music.

Benefits
  • Suitable for speech and music
  • High frequency transmission range
  • Defined directivity
Components
  • 2 × LXP-150
  • 2 × AS-22 subwoofer, if necessary
  • 2 × MA-2.1200

Huge projects

When acoustics are even more challenging

For large cathedrals and big church rooms it's important to find audio solutions that are scalable whilst providing control over the sound dispersion.
Fohhn Beam Steering technology makes sound dispersion to the church visitors controlable via software, without having to tilt the systems downwards.

When acoustics become more difficult and reverberation times are very long, Fohhn Beam Steering technology comes into play. It enables digital adjustment of the sound dispersion to the church visitors without having to tilt the systems downwards.

Benefits
  • Perfect adjustment of the sound beams
  • Even more effective prevention of disturbing reflections
  • Achieves the best possible sound result
Components
  • 4 × DLI-430

Projects around the globe

Fohhn loudspeakers are at home in projects all over the world - from airports to opera houses - and also in churches, from Berlin's Memorial Church to the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in New Cairo. And many smaller houses of worship also rely on Fohhn.

Our references also show how our loudspeakers for churches can be integrated into listed buildings. A prime example is the Saint Jean-Baptiste de Mauléon church in the French Basque Country. Fohhn manufactured the loudspeaker system in the shape of a cross. This makes it invisible to visitors to the church, and there was no need to drill.

Another example of church loudspeakers made with special colors and in special lengths is the Reformed Church in Thalwil (Switzerland). Here the loudspeakers are mounted directly on the portal, to the left and right of the organ. The result was a full sound and a perfect visual integration into the listed architecture of the church.

An alternative solution is shown by the reference project of the Minster Church of All Saints in Schaffhusen (Switzerland). Since the columns of the church are under monument protection, a local matall locksmith made extra floor stands for our loudspeakers. A visually unobtrusive solution that ensures good sound in the church.
